Russia’s war against Ukraine

Iran acknowledges supplying Russia with drones, claims it happened before Feb. 24. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian acknowledged for the first time on Nov. 5 that his country had provided drones to Russia, but claimed that it happened before Russia’s full-scale invasion.

ISW: Iran exploits Russia’s dependence on kamikaze drone supplies. The Institute for the Study of War said in its latest assessment that Iran is likely already using Russia’s dependence on the supply of kamikaze drones “to request Russian assistance with its nuclear program.” “The nuclear assistance requests and the recognition of the drone shipments are both indicators that Iranian officials may intend to more clearly establish an explicit bilateral security relationship with Russia in which they are more equal partners,” the ISW reports.

Russia kidnaps 34 children from Kherson Oblast. Russian forces took 34 children from the Preobrazhenka village in the Myrne community to Russia’s Anapa, Kherson Oblast Governor Yaroslav Yanushevych said, citing Valentyna Holovata, the head of the Myrne community military administration. “The parents were promised that their children would be returned by the end of this week, but then the time of stay was extended again for another week,” Yanushevych said in a Telegram post on Nov. 5.

Politico: Russia hasn’t destroyed single HIMARS in Ukraine. Russian forces haven’t destroyed any of the U.S.-provided High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), Politico reported, citing a Pentagon official.

Zelensky: Ukraine to start fundraising for marine drones fleet. “This is only for the protection of our marine water area. We don’t claim anything that doesn’t belong to us,” Zelensky said.

Governor: It will take at least 10 years to demine occupied Luhansk Oblast. Demining the entire Luhansk Oblast would take at least 10 years, according to its governor Serhiy Haidai. The region is now almost entirely occupied by Russian forces.

IAEA: External power at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant restored. Two days after the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost all access to external electricity following Russian shelling, it was reconnected to power, Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Nov. 5.

Ukrenergo: Hourly blackouts scheduled in Kyiv and 7 oblasts. State-owned grid operator Ukrenergo said on Nov. 5 that another hourly blackout schedule had been introduced in seven oblasts across the country and the capital Kyiv. The seven regions include Kyiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Sumy, and Poltava oblasts.

Assassination attempt reported on judge who sentenced UK fighters to death. Oleksandr Nikulin, a judge of the illegal Russian-installed “supreme court“ in occupied Donetsk, suffered gunshot wounds and is currently in critical condition following an assassination attempt on Nov. 4 in the Russian-occupied town of Vuhlehirsk, Donetsk Oblast, Novaya Gazeta Europe, an independent Russian newspaper, reported on Nov. 5.

UK intelligence: Newly mobilized Russian troops arrive with ‘minimal or no training at all.’ The U.K. Defense Ministry said in its intelligence briefing on Nov. 5 that Russia is struggling to provide military training for its current mobilization drive and its annual fall conscription intake.

Media: Russian soldier who fought against Ukraine suspected of arson that killed 15 people. According to Russian media, the 23-year-old Stanislav Ionkin has been arrested on suspicion of starting a massive fire at a cafe in the Russian city of Kostroma that killed 15 people overnight on Nov. 5. He had been injured and returned from the front in Ukraine in August.

The human cost of Russia’s war

Governor: Child injured in Russian shelling of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. As a result of the heavy artillery fire on the Myrove municipality, a nine-year-old girl was injured and hospitalized, according to Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Valentyn Reznichenko.

Governor: Russia’s war kills at least 3 civilians, wounds 8 in Donetsk Oblast. Donetsk Oblast Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko reported on Nov. 5 that at least three civilians were killed and eight were wounded over the past day. The eastern region, where about 350,000 people remain despite a government-installed mandatory evacuation, came under another round of heavy Russian shelling overnight.

Russian media: Hundreds of Russian conscripts killed in Luhansk Oblast. According to Russian media outlet Verstka, Ukrainian forces attacked the battalion of mobilized Russians, killing hundreds near Makiivka village in the embattled Luhansk Oblast on Nov. 2.

General Staff: Russia has lost 75,440 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24. Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Nov. 5 that Russia had also lost 2,758 tanks, 5,601 armored fighting vehicles, 4,184 vehicles and fuel tanks, 1,776 artillery systems, 391 multiple launch rocket systems, 202 air defense systems, 277 airplanes, 260 helicopters, 1,462 drones, and 16 boats.
